Feldberg with Children — the Best Excursions & Activities
Feldberg with children — boredom? No chance
“Hiking with children sounds like grumbling?” Not on the Feldberg. Around the highest mountain in the Black Forest there is enough to discover to keep even little explorers busy for days — from themed adventure trails and a fast summer toboggan run to interactive nature exhibitions.
We have put together the finest excursion destinations for families, with concrete distances and honest notes on what suits which age. (If you are travelling with very small children, you will find practical tips on logistics in Black Forest with Children Under 5.)
1. Wichtelpfad in the Auerhahnwald — discovering the forest playfully
Right on the Feldberg, the Wichtelpfad (gnome trail) in the Auerhahnwald invites children to explore the forest on their own. Along the way, lovingly designed stations tell of the life of the forest gnomes and of the local flora and fauna. The trail is short and easy to walk — ideal for younger children and a relaxed afternoon.
2. Haus der Natur — nature conservation centre on the Feldberg
The Haus der Natur on the Feldberg is the perfect starting point for a family day. In the interactive exhibition, children learn in a playful way how the Black Forest came to be and which animals live here. A good plan B for rainy days — and a lovely introduction before heading outdoors.
3. Hasenhorn Coaster in Todtnau — summer toboggan run with pace
About 20 minutes from the Feldberg lies Todtnau — where the Hasenhorn Coaster awaits, a 2.9 km long summer toboggan run. On rails it goes down the mountain through bends and banked curves, with the children (or the parents) setting the pace themselves. A highlight for older children and anyone who likes it a little faster.
4. Todtnau Waterfall — a natural spectacle up close
Right nearby, the Todtnau Waterfall plunges over 97 metres into the depths — one of the highest natural waterfalls in Germany. Steps and paths let you experience the natural spectacle up close. It is especially impressive in spring after the snowmelt.
An honest note: the paths by the waterfall are partly steep and can be wet and slippery. Sturdy footwear is essential, and small children should be held by the hand.
5. Swimming at Titisee and Schluchsee
On warm days the water beckons. Titisee and Schluchsee lie just a few minutes’ drive away and offer lido beaches with shallow shoreline zones, pedal boats and ice cream by the shore. More on this in Swimming in the Upper Black Forest.
6. Easy hikes for families
Not every hike ends in tears. The Feldsee circular trail (approx. 3 km, easy) leads once around the mystical cirque lake and is also manageable for smaller children. You will find many more family-friendly tours under The Finest Hiking Trails on the Feldberg. But do not think about swimming in the Feldsee — that is not allowed in the nature reserve.
