Feldberg or Titisee? Which Is the Better Holiday Base
The most common question before booking
Anyone planning a Black Forest holiday and looking at the map sees two names that keep coming up: Feldberg and Titisee. Both lie in the High Black Forest, both are considered top holiday destinations, both are mentioned in every travel guide — but they are very different.
We are often asked where one should stay. The honest answer: it depends on your travel type. Here is a direct comparison to help with the decision.
Geographically — the most important difference
Feldberg is a mountain (1,493 m, the highest elevation in the Black Forest) and at the same time the name of the surrounding municipality. The Feldberg municipality includes several small districts (Altglashütten, Bärental, Falkau, Feldberg-Ort), which lie in the high valley around the mountain at about 950 to 1,300 m elevation.
Titisee is a lake (1.3 km² water surface) and the name of the adjacent town Titisee-Neustadt. The town lies at 858 m elevation, south of Freiburg, about 10 kilometres (15 minutes by car) west of Feldberg.
The elevation difference of 300-500 metres makes a lot of difference in practice — for the weather, for the climate, for the activities.
Atmosphere — nature paradise vs tourist magnet
Feldberg is rather rural, quiet, and natural. The districts each have a few hundred inhabitants, one or two restaurants, a small shop. The mountain dominates. Anyone who comes here is looking for nature, silence, fresh air — and sport. Even in high season it is not overrun.
Titisee has been the most well-known tourist destination in the Black Forest for decades. The Seestrasse with its souvenir shops, ice cream parlours, and restaurants can become full in high summer. There is a proper promenade, several hotels, lots of day tourists from buses. Charming in a touristy way, but definitely not “secluded”.

Where does it overlap?
Both places are reachable from each other within 15 minutes. Anyone staying at Feldberg can drive to Titisee at any time. Anyone staying at Titisee can drive to Feldberg at any time. In practice, holidaymakers use both — the question is just where you sleep.
Who should choose Feldberg?
- Hikers and mountain enthusiasts — the main routes start directly at the village
- Skiers and snowboarders — ski area at the door, no commuting
- Families with active children — lots of space, little traffic, many play opportunities in nature
- Dog owners — endless walking paths; lead requirement in the nature reserve, but otherwise wide spaces
- Those seeking peace — no day tourism, no city noise, starlit nights
- Those arriving by car — lots of parking space, free spaces
- Self-caterers — apartments with kitchen dominate the market
Who should choose Titisee?
- Those travelling without a car — direct rail connection, everything walkable
- Day-trippers and spontaneous visitors — bus and rail stop, lots of infrastructure
- Those seeking hotel comfort — several classic hotels with restaurant, spa, full board
- Walkers rather than hikers — promenade is flat and barrier-poor
- Those wanting indoor options — Badeparadies, casino, many cafes
- Those looking for classic Black Forest souvenirs — cuckoo clocks, Bollenhut memorabilia, liqueur
- Water sports enthusiasts — SUP, pedalo, swimming directly on site
Who should experience both?
Actually everyone. With a week’s booking at Feldberg you automatically come to Titisee on at least one day — be it for the Badeparadies in the rain, a promenade tour with the family, or a restaurant visit at the lake. Conversely, every Titisee guest should spend at least one day at Feldberg — whether for hiking or simply for the view from the Seebuck.
Climate and weather
The elevation difference of 500 metres has an effect:
- Feldberg: 5-8 °C cooler in summer, significantly more snow in winter (season often December-April), fog and rain more often
- Titisee: milder temperatures, snow often only from January, less fog in the valley
In high summer the elevation difference is an advantage of Feldberg — at 30 °C in the valley it is a pleasant 22 °C on the mountain. In spring and autumn it can already be cool at Feldberg, while at Titisee sun in the cafe is still possible.
Prices — the comparison
In high season (July/August and February) accommodation at Feldberg is mostly cheaper than at Titisee, because there are fewer hotel chains there and the offer is more focused on apartments.
Concrete order of magnitude:
- Apartment at Feldberg: from approx. €90/night in low season, €150-200 in high season
- Apartment at Titisee: slightly more expensive, from approx. €100/night in low season, €180-230 in high season
- Hotel at Titisee: €120-180 per double room/night
- Hotel at Feldberg: €100-160
Anyone arriving by car often has free parking spaces at Feldberg too — at Titisee parking quickly costs €5-10 per day in high season.
Restaurants and food
Titisee has more restaurants per square metre, but the level varies greatly. Classic tourist traps directly on the Seestrasse stand next to genuine insider tips in the side streets. Anyone who takes time to search finds good food — anyone who simply goes to the next address can also have bad luck.
At Feldberg there is less choice, but the level is on average higher — mountain huts and inns that live from hikers and not from day guests almost always cook honestly. Recommended: Berggasthaus Todtnauer Hütte, Gasthaus Hebelhof, Gasthof Bärental.
Travel
- By car: Both places via A5 → B31 → B500/B317. Feldberg lies 10 minutes further east than Titisee.
- By rail: Titisee has an ICE-near station (connection in Donaueschingen or Freiburg). The Dreiseenbahn continues to Feldberg — Feldberg-Bärental station.
- By bus: Both places are well connected to the regional bus network. Free with the Hochschwarzwald-Card.
Our honest recommendation
If the question is “Where should we stay?”: Feldberg, provided you:

Titisee, if you:

At Black Forest Dream you sit at Feldberg and are at Titisee in 15 minutes — the location gives you both without compromise.
