Family Holiday in the Black Forest: 10 Activities at Feldberg with Kids
Feldberg — a paradise for families
Feldberg in the Upper Black Forest is not only the highest mountain in Baden-Wurttemberg, but also one of the most versatile family destinations in southern Germany. At 1,493 meters and surrounded by forests, lakes, and gentle valleys, there is enough to do here all year round — without boredom ever setting in. We have put together ten activities that are equally fun for children and parents.
1. Children’s ski area at Feldberg
In winter, Feldberg is the most snow-reliable ski area in the Black Forest. At Seebuck, there is a dedicated family zone with wide, gentle slopes and magic carpet lifts for the little ones. Ski schools offer lessons starting from around age four — and while the children practice their first turns, parents can explore the longer runs at Grafenmatt. A day pass for the Liftverbund Feldberg covers all lifts in the area.
2. Hasenhorn Coaster in Todtnau
About 20 minutes from Feldberg lies Todtnau, and there the Hasenhorn Coaster awaits — a 2.9-kilometer summer toboggan run with panoramic views of the Wiesental valley. The ride uses individual carts with speed controls, so younger children (from age 3 when accompanied) can ride too. On sunny days, queues build up, so a morning visit is worth it.
3. Badeparadies Schwarzwald in Titisee
Rain? No problem. The Badeparadies Schwarzwald in Titisee-Neustadt (15 minutes by car) is one of the largest water parks in the region. The palm tree oasis with slides, wave pools, and tropical temperatures is the absolute favourite among kids. For parents, there is a separate sauna area with views of the Black Forest. A half-day ticket is usually enough — though the children always want to stay longer.
4. Steinwasen Park
Steinwasen Park near Oberried (about 25 minutes from Feldberg) is a mix of wildlife park and amusement park, nestled into the Black Forest landscape. Highlights include the 218-meter suspension bridge across a valley, a summer toboggan run, a wildlife enclosure with deer, marmots, and ibex, and playgrounds in various themed worlds. The park is compact enough for a relaxed half-day outing — no stress, no endless walking.
5. Boat trip on Titisee
Titisee is just 15 minutes from Feldberg and one of the most well-known lakes in the Black Forest. Pedal boats and rowing boats can be rented directly at the lakeside, and a round trip on the excursion boat takes about 25 minutes. Children love watching ducks from the boat and marvelling at the crystal-clear water. Afterwards, a stroll along the Seestrasse is well worth it — with the obligatory stop for ice cream.
6. Easy hikes with kids
Hiking with children sounds like a recipe for complaints? Not at Feldberg. There are several short, well-maintained trails that are manageable even for little legs. The Feldsee circular trail (about 3 km, 1 hour) leads to a mystical glacial lake and is flat enough for children from around age four. The Wichtelpfad at Feldberg is an adventure trail with stations for solving puzzles, climbing, and exploring — perfect for primary school children. And from the Haus der Natur, several themed trails start that explain nature in a playful way.
7. Strandbad Schluchsee
Schluchsee is the largest lake in the Black Forest by surface area and lies about 20 minutes east of Feldberg. The lido in the town of Schluchsee has a shallow entry area, sunbathing lawns, a diving tower, and a playground — a perfect summer day. The water is fresh (it is a mountain lake, after all), but on warm days, it is absolutely refreshing. SUP boards and kayaks can also be rented.
8. Haus der Natur at Feldberg
The Haus der Natur is the central information centre for the Feldberg nature reserve and also a small but excellent interactive museum. Children can discover the wildlife and plant life of the Upper Black Forest here — with touch stations, listening boxes, and a walk-through model of the Feldberg landscape. Admission is free, and as a starting point for hikes, the Haus is the first port of call anyway.
9. Black Forest Open-Air Museum Vogtsbauernhof
In Gutach (about 50 minutes from Feldberg) stands the oldest open-air museum in Baden-Wurttemberg. Six original Black Forest farmhouses from different centuries show what life in the Black Forest used to look like — from a working farm with animals to a historic mill and sawmill. Children can bake bread, make butter, and play on the adventure playground. A full-day outing that makes history tangible.
10. Mini golf and adventure golf
For a relaxed afternoon, the mini golf courses in the region are a solid choice. In Titisee-Neustadt, there is an adventure golf course with 18 holes in a Black Forest theme — over little waterfalls, through tree trunks, and across hills. No high-tech, but exactly the right thing after an active morning. The courses are open from spring to autumn.
